PLM landscapes are constantly changing and with them integration requirements. Proprietary point-to-point interfaces between individual applications are no longer able to meet these requirements.
The alternative is a standards-based integration platform that allows new IT systems to be connected easily and data to be synchronized with all the systems that have already been integrated.
OpenPDM has been around for 20 years. The integration platform’s functional scope and possible areas of application have changed dramatically during this time. Thanks to its new, microservices-based architecture, it can now also be used in hybrid cloud/on-premise scenarios.
Digital Twins offer the possibility to simulate the behavior of physical assets, to monitor them during operation and to continuously improve them. The data and models from planning and development form the context in which the operating data can be interpreted correctly. Putting them together from the wealth of available information is an essential prerequisite for the use of digital twin applications.
Short-time working and working from home define the daily work routine during the coronavirus pandemic. PROSTEP’s OpenDESC team nevertheless continues to provide round-the-clock support to customers when converting, migrating and transferring their CAD and PLM data. PROSTEP is expanding its software environment to meet growing demand for its cloud-based OpenDESC.com service.
Now that the SAMPL project has been successfully completed, PROSTEP has made the blockchain-based solution for the forgery-proof exchange of 3D print data part of its consulting portfolio. In an online discussion called TechTALK, our experts informed customers and interested parties about the blockchain and possible use cases in the PLM environment.
Research into the coronavirus and possible therapies requires extremely computationally intensive computer simulations to analyze the dynamic behavior of the protein structures. We provide Foldig@home, a distributed computing project for the simulation of protein behavior, with the unused computing power of our in-house server cluster and encourage other companies to do the same.
Finding the right PDM system is a challenge for companies with limited IT resources and with no expertise in the field of PDM. This is why Oberhausen-based GHH-Radsatz GmbH, which is part of the GHH-BONATRANS Group, brought in the PLM consultants from PROSTEP. They not only supported the company in defining the requirements and selecting the system, but also accompanied the pilot implementation.
In one fell swoop, the robotics and automation specialist KUKA has migrated its SAP installation, introduced Teamcenter as its new PLM system and reorganized the entire engineering-to-order process. Crucial to the project’s success were the soft PLM migration, during which the legacy and new system coexisted for a short period, and the consistent cleansing of the data, which KUKA undertook with the assistance of PROSTEP AG. PROSTEP also accompanied KUKA during the changeover to the current Teamcenter version.
Short-time work and home office determine everyday working life in the Corona pandemic. Nevertheless, the OpenDESC team at PROSTEP continues to support customers around the clock in the conversion, migration and transfer of their CAD and PLM data. We have expanded our software environment to meet the growing demand for our cloud-based OpenDESC.com service.

In the last newsletter, I wrote “To stand still is no option for us” with reference to the difficulties facing the management of companies in an age of global uncertainties. And then came the lockdown and suddenly (almost) everything ground to a halt. Admittedly, the coronavirus pandemic was not entirely unforeseeable, but we were unprepared for the scale with which it hit us. I do, however, feel that one point I made has been confirmed: The situation can only be mastered using an agile approach. And with an even greater level of digitalization, I would now add.
