ChatGPT has transformed artificial intelligence (AI) into a topic that is surrounded by a lot of hype. While AI is already being used in production, it is only just starting to be adopted in the product development field. In an interview for the PROSTEP Newsletter, Professor Roman Dumitrescu, one of the directors of the Fraunhofer IEM in Paderborn, explains the potentials that enterprises are letting pass them by.
At PROSTEP, over 80 programmers work on the software solutions that we develop ourselves and help big-name customers develop their own PLM applications. The use of agile methods has enabled us to increase the efficiency of our development teams continuously in recent years. The next step in the improvement process is the use of AI-based development tools.
The hyped-up topic at this year’s prostep ivip Symposium was without question artificial intelligence, which was addressed in Expert corners, workshops and even in several presentations by customers. Generative AI in particular promises spectacular time savings in application areas such as automatic code generation. However, the question I ask myself is what AI can do to better help tackle the real challenge posed by digital product development, a challenge that the prostep ivip community has been grappling with for over three decades: namely cross-enterprise collaboration.
