My name is Prof. Dr. Iris Gräßlerand I hold the Chair of Product Development at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute of Paderborn University. My Chair particularly deals with strategic planning, systems engineering, digitalization and virtualization. We work together with PROSTEP AG on the research, product impact and study interconnected development processes of small and medium sized enterprises. The study that we carried out during this project shows that small and medium sized enterprises do use the usual CAD, PDM and EAP systems. It is just model based systems engineering that hasn’t been given the attention it deserves.

Apparently, businesses aren’t aware that MBSE offers a clear competitive advantage.

Only businesses that get involved now will be able to benefit from this advantage. It’s here that we tend to refer to opportunity costs costs that are paid when you miss an opportunity. Here at the Chair for Product Development at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute of Padaborn University, we are committed to ensuring systems engineering is implemented in small and medium sized enterprises. We are particularly proud of the further development of the VDI guideline 2206. Focusing on mechatronic and cyber physical systems.

We’ve managed to extend the guideline to digital business models and continuous requirements development. We’ve developed the V model to take into account the complexity of technical systems. Today you can find an overview of the current methods of systems engineering in our book, understanding and Implementing Systems Engineering. MBSE is relevant to all businesses where requirements management and certification play an important role.

How important it is is made very clear at a time when software functionalities are driving system complexity ever higher. The more assistance functions are integrated into a system, the more important it becomes to look ahead to ensure quality and safety and security.

Many businesses are at the start of their MBSE journey, but if they succeed in convincing their developers now and thoroughly implementing the approach, then they’ll have a sustainable competitive advantage. Successfully introducing systems engineering and model based systems engineering is dependent on a variety of factors. Firstly, it is important to convey knowledge about the new methods. There is a dearth of experts with the right qualifications. Because MBSE has only recently become a focus at universities, a well thought out tool environment is helpful, giving engineers the right tools to model and simulate their system functionalities.

Systems engineering often begins by introducing a structured requirements management and test management, which then work together. Finally, introducing model based systems engineering is a significant change which has to be carried out professionally in order to be successful. One important thing to bear in mind is to ensure that experienced engineers are involved as well as young engineers facing the first paradigm of their career in systems engineering. Because only if they work together will it be possible to change the culture within the company. All the best from Padeborn.
